About this test
What this test measures
Nearly 50% of US adults have diabetes or prediabetes.¹ Regularly monitoring your blood glucose and insulin levels can help you understand your metabolic health and adapt your lifestyle and treatments to prevent or manage diabetes and other conditions.
This test measures 2 important markers to help you understand your metabolic health:
- Glucose - A sugar used for energy. High glucose (hyperglycemia) and low glucose (hypoglycemia) may be signs of diabetes or other metabolic conditions.
- Insulin - A hormone that moves glucose from the bloodstream into cells, where it can be used for energy. Abnormal insulin levels may cause diabetes or be signs of other metabolic conditions.
Who should take this test
Symptoms of diabetes may occur suddenly. In other cases, they may be mild and take years to notice. Take a glucose and insulin test if you:
- Are overweight or have obesity
- Are age 45 or older
- Have a family history of diabetes
- Have high blood pressure
- Don't exercise enough
- Have a history of heart disease or stroke
- Have had gestational diabetes (diabetes that happens only during pregnancy)
You may also want to take this test if you have symptoms of hypoglycemia, which include:
- Sweating
- Trembling
- Irregular heartbeat
- Confusion
- Dizziness
- Blurred vision
- Extreme hunger
You must be age 18 or older to take this test. Due to state restrictions, this test is not available to residents of New York.

What to know about diabetes
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a chronic disease that happens when your body doesn't produce enough insulin or it can't use insulin as well as it should. This causes unhealthy levels of blood sugar, which can lead to serious health complications, including cardiovascular disease, over time. Nearly 50% of US adults have diabetes or prediabetes.¹ Diabetes is the eighth leading cause of death in the United States.²
